Traduje para la primera vez hoy! Hubo una conferencia sobre traje tradicional de mujeres Mayas y inmediatamente antes de la conferencia, había preguntado ser la traductora. Pasó con exito; estoy orgullosa que pueda reportar no había muchos problemas!
Más clases de baile hoy, bachata esta vez, y entonces una conversación muy larga con mi familia sobre los peligros en el trabajo, especialmente en el sindicato, de mi papá. Hay muchísimo corrupción en este país y es peligroso para los hombres trabajan en departamentos del gobierno. Usualmente es hombres porque la mayoría de las mujeres no trabajan en el gobierno. Lloré un poco durante su historia sobre su amigo que había matado por algunos hombres corruptos porque era una parte importante del sindicato. Que triste es la historia de esta pais.
I translated for the first time today! I went to a lecture on traditional Mayan women's clothing and immediately before the lecture, I was asked to be the translator. It was successful; I'm proud that I'm able to report there weren't a lot of problems!
More dance classes today, bachata this time, and then a long conversation with my family about the dangers of my host dad's job, especially in the union. There's a lot of corruption in this country and it's dangerous for the men (usually it's men because the majority of women don't work in the government). I cried a little during his story about his friend who was killed by some corrupt men because he was an important part of the union. This country has a sad history.

Canopy y otras aventuras
Que relajante y increíble es esta ciudad...usualmente :) A veces relajante no es la palabra correcta; viernes fue muy divertido pero no fue relajante. Hubo la aniversario de 25 años de la escuela con mucho bailando, cantando, y oraciones especiales. Entonces muchas personas fueron a una discoteca para continuar bailar, pero la policia llegó a las 12 y media. Hay una regla (no sabía esto) aquí que música fuerte está prohibida después de medianoche, y todas las personas necesitan salir de fiestas por la una.
Pero a veces relajante es la palabra perfecta. Creo que no hay un paisaje más relajante y bonito que la finca de café cuarenta minutes afuera de Xela. Fuimos a Canopy ayer para ver la vista y volar arriba de los arboles....que rico. Me encantaba la experiencia. Entonces, después de una aventura de quedando mis llaves en el carro y prestando un cuaderno de mi amigo, fui a reponer clases con mi maestra en un café muy bonito y por la noche a un restaurante con jazz en vivo.
Nota: mi infección es casi terminada! Hurra!

Then a bunch of people went to a nightclub to continue dancing, but the police arrived at 12:30 to kick everyone out. There is a rule (I did not know this) here that loud music is prohibited after midnight, and everyone needs to leave the party by one. But sometimes relaxing is the perfect word. I think there is not a more relaxing and beautiful landscape than the coffee farm forty minutes outside of Xela. We went to Canopy (ziplining) yesterday to see the view and fly above the trees .... it was awesome. I loved the experience. Then, after an adventure of leaving my keys in the car and borrowing a notebook from my friend, I went to make up my classes with my teacher at a very nice cafe and in the evening to a restaurant with live jazz.

Es mi turno estar enferma
Hoy empezó como un día mejor, pero después de tratar de explicarle a mi maestra sobre el conflicto retorcido en Israel, yo tenía mucho dolor en mi estómago. Fui al laboratorio hoy para descubrir que enfermedad que tengo- mis resultados fueron un infección de mis intestinos. Tengo suerte- hay muchas enfermedades mucho peor que ésa. Iba a ir a una feria en San Cristobal hoy, pero necesito descansarme en lugar de ése. También tengo suerte que mi familia y la escuela tienen cuidado a mi; estoy agradecida que mi maestra, las directoras de la escuela, y mi familia han sido curadores increíbles.

Mi familia es el mejor
Después de diciendo "adiós" a mi compañero de dormitorio, fui con mi familia al restaurante donde tienen un bolo cada domingo. Dije que son músicos? Es bueno. Mira. Mientras tocaban, yo jugaba fútbol y otros juegos con mis hermanitas menores y otros niños allá en el patio. Sentaba un poquito como una mamá; hice almuerzo, tenía cuidado a los niños....fue MUY divertido. Siento afortunada por la confianza mi familia tiene por yo como eso. Entonces fuimos a casa, mi hermanita mayor y yo vimos la película 12 años en esclavitud (y comprendí la mayoría sin preguntas; buena película). Lloramos un poco, ella ayudó con mi tarea....y ahora es el tiempo empezar la semana nueva. Tiempo está volando.

After saying goodbye to my house mate, I went with my family to the restaurant where they have a gig every Sunday. Did I mention they're musicians? It's great. Look. While they played, I played soccer and other games with my little host sisters and other kids there in the courtyard. I felt a little like a mom; I made lunch, I watched the kids....it was SUPER fun. I feel fortunate to have my family's trust like that. Then we came home, my host sister and I watched 12 Years a Slave (and I understood the majority of it without questions; great movie). We cried a little, she helped me with my homework....and now it's time to start the new week. Time is flying.

Fui a la playa esta mañana- después de un rato, llegamos a una playa muy bonita y relajante. Hablé con algunos guatemaltecos y senté afortunado para tener un conversation real. Bueno. Regresámos, mi hermano anfitriono y yo, muy tarde. Después de la playa nuestro familia tocaron las instrumentas por un rato y salimos reunir a un amigos de la escuela. Es el ultimo día de mi hermano y por eso tomamos muchas fotos; mañana.
Went to the beach this morning- after a while, we got to a beautiful and relaxing stretch of beach. I talked with some of the natives and felt lucky to be part of a real conversation. Awesome. When we came back (Nathan and I) late. After the beach our family played a bunch of instruments and then we left to meet some friends from school. Muchas cosas hoy: lección privada de baile, entrevista por una practica en los Estados Unidos por Skype, y una fiesta y "competencia de baile" informal a la escuela. Bailé mucho, me disfruté esos mucho. A la playa por la mañana! Buenas noches!

Fluencia....relajate.
El tema de mi viaje a Xela he sido "relajate". El sentido de tiempo aquí es muy relajada y la gente es muy tranquilo sobre todo. Para mi la cosa que es el más importante sobre esto es el siguiente: cuando yo estoy hablando en español, si yo estoy nerviosa o de otro modo estresada, no puedo hablar.
Es lo mismo por otros; hoy califique una competencia de exposiciones en ingles por un organization que enseña a los chicos guatemaltecos como hablar ingles. Fue muy divertido. Ellos me dijeron que es más difícil hablar cuando estaban nerviosos, pero estoy segura que no puedo hablar español tan bueno como ellos hablaban ingles.
Despues de la competencia (lo que fue mi clase hoy), fuimos a fuentes georginas, una lugar muy bonita con fuentes calientes y muchas piscinas muy lindas. Estaba en cielo en el agua caliente....fue MUY bonita:

The theme of my travel to Xela has been "chill out." The sense of time here is really relaxed and the people are really chill about everything. For me the most important thing about it is this: when I am speaking spanishm if I'm nervous or otherwise stressed, I can't speak.
It's the same for other people apparently; today I judged for an English exposition competition for an organization that teaches Guatemalan kids how to speak English. It was really fun. They all told me that it's harder to speak when they're nervous; but I'm sure that I can't speak Spanish as well as they were speaking English.
After the competition (which was my class today), we went to Fuentes Georginas, a really beautiful place with hot springs and a lot of beautiful pools. I was in heaven in the hot water....it was SO beautiful.
This place is the best.

Sagrado
Violación fue la tema de mi clase esta mañana, una continuación de ayer. Si tu quieres, este articulo discute un aspecto (de violación) interesante y controvertido. Mi maestra y yo hablamos mucho sobre la santidad del cuerpo y del opciones. Me parece que es apropiado que entonces fui a Zunil después, un ciudad cerca de Xela que tiene mucho santidad a dentro. Zunil tiene algunos lugares culturales relatados a santidad. Visitamos una iglesia donde los paredes son negros con la color del humos de las candelas incididas de los rituales Maya. Visitamos el lugar de San Simon, una estatua Maya que parece como un hispano y la gente de Zunil le pide (en un método ritual, cual yo vi) por favores. Y también visitamos un cooperativa de mujeres que nació de la guerra civil y vende cosas Mayas hechas de mano y tradicionales. Eso lugar tiene un santidad en y de su mismo. Es posible que yo comprara algo o más :)
Cuando fui a La Parranda esta noche, no bailé porque hay una competencia de baile en viernes y yo VOY a bailar. El lunes pasado yo doblé mi pie, pero está mejorando. Hasta mañana!

We visited the home of San Simon, a Mayan statue that looks like a hispanic man and the people of Zunil ask (in a Mayan ritual I got to see) for favors. And we also visited a woman's cooperative that was born of the civil war and sells handmade traditional Mayan stuff. That place has a sanctity in and of itself. It's possible that I bought something, or more than one something :)
When I went to La Parranda tonight, I didn't dance because there's a dance competition on Friday and I'm GOING to dance. This past Monday I rolled my ankle, but it's getting better. Til tomorrow!

Discusiones muy importantes
Estoy segura que mi español está mejorando. La temas de conversación durante clase hoy con Claudia incluyeron espiritualidad, la energía de los cosmos, frutas exóticas, y, mi tema que me causa mucho estrés: violación. Fue muy común en Guatemala hasta más o menos treinta años pasado. Que triste.
Abajo es mi maestra, Claudia, con un rambután, su fruta exótica favorita. Ella lo trajo para mi para probarlo :) También fui a Gotcha con la escuela hoy- fue divertido pero hacía lluvia y por eso fue un poco difícil ver. No me gusta mucho jugar, pero fue divertido todavía. Hasta mañana!

Mi pie.....y nahual.
Durante clase yo estaba muy cansada hoy....y por eso, por supuesto, no dormí. Fui a clase de baile después de clase y entonces a jugar fútbol, donde yo me doblé mi pie. Lo me duele ahora... y por eso voy a descansar y hacer mi tarea por la mañana- es sobre el nahual, más o menos el animal espiritual o el alma de la cultura Maya.
During class I was super tired today....and so, of course, I didn't sleep. I went to a salsa and bachata class after school and went to play soccer, where I rolled my ankle. It hurts a little right now....and so I'm gonna rest and do my homework in the morning; it's about the nahual, basically a mix between a spirit animal and soul in Mayan culture.

Mi familia de bailarines!
Me encanta bailar, sí? Por supuesto. Sabía que bailaba mucho en Guatemala, pero no sabía que mi familia le encantaba bailar también :) Por dos horas, más o menos (no sé), teníamos una fiesta de baile. Salsa, merengue, swing, y un poco de reggaeton.....fue tan divertido!!!! Mi familia es perfecto para mi. Ellos son como "hippies", o el más cerca de hippies que una persona puede ser, y ellos les encanta bailar. Por que más puedo preguntar?
También hoy hubo el partido final del fútbol mundial. Fue muy triste para la mayoría de la gente estaba en el bar donde yo estaba mirándolo. AR-GEN-TINA.....entonces no ganaron. Que triste. Después del partido fui al mercado y tenía mi primer éxito cuando estaba comprando anteojos del sol! Bueno! Entonces encontré mi familia anfitriona en el mercado y por eso fui a mi casa con ellos (y sus amigos). Entonces la fiesta empezó!
También, mi hermana me enseñó muchos juegos y como planchar hoy. Fue tan bueno.
Clase por la mañana. Estoy tan lista.

I knew that I would dance a lot in Guatemala, but I did not know that my family would love to dance as well :) For two hours, more or less (I don't know how long), we had a dance party. Salsa, merengue, swing, and a little hip hop....it was SO fun!!!! My family is perfect for me. They are basically hippies, or the closest to hippies a person can be, and they love to dance. What more could I ask for?
Also today was the finals for the World Cup. It was super sad for the majority of people I was with while I watched the game. They were chanting AR-GEN-TINA....and then they didn't win. How sad. After the game I went to the market and had my first successful bargaining attempt! Hooray! Then I found mi host family in the market and so I went back to my house with them (and their friends). That's when the dance party started :)
Also, my host sister taught me a bunch of games and how to iron today. It was pretty cool.

Vale la pena :)
Fue un día relajado; fui a un proyecto de reforestación donde plantamos doscientos arbolitos, y entonces (después de una siesta) fui a una chocolatería con unos amigos. Hablamos mucho y entonces volví a mi casa, fui a la tienda con mi hermanita, y hablé con mi familia hasta ahora. Necesito dormir, pero es vale la pena!
It was a relaxed day; I went to a reforestation project where we planted 200 trees, and then (after a nap) I went to a chocolate store with some friends. We talked a lot and then I came home, went to the store with my host sister, and talked with my host family until now. I need to sleep, but it's worth it!
Mi primera fiesta!
Es tan difícil dormir aquí para mi, porque hay muchas cosas divertidas en Xela hacer. La escuela tiene una fiesta cada viernes, y por eso después de mi clase hoy, y después de mi mamá me mostró el centro comercial, fui a la fiesta y entonces a una discoteca para bailar. Volví hace 10 minutos....y ahora voy a dormir. Reforestación por la mañana! Más sobre esto luego!
It's pretty difficult for me to sleep here, because there are so many fun things to do in Xela. The school has a party every Friday, and so after my class, and after my mom showed me the "mall", I went to the party and then to a dance club. I came back 10 minutes ago.....and now I'm going to sleep! Reforestation in the morning! More on that later!
It's pretty difficult for me to sleep here, because there are so many fun things to do in Xela. Se enamorando a Xela
Lo siento- no tengo mucho tiempo porque necesito dormir. Haya estuviera hablando con mis padres anfitrionas por dos horas.... hablemos sobre muchas cosas después de escuché a su banda y hablé con los miembros de esto. Otras cosas de hoy: vi una película muy triste y gráfico sobre la guerra civil en Guatemala. La duró seis años y fue muy terrible. La película me dio una corazón pesada y pecho vacío. En otras noticias, hice mi tarea en un café y bebí la horchata mejor allí.....
Es el tiempo de sueño. Tengo un poco miedo que amo Xela más que es saludable.... Hasta mañana!
I'm sorry- I don't have much time because I need to sleep. I was talking with my host parents for two hours....we talked about a lot of things after I listened to and talked with the members of their band. Other things today: I saw a really sad and graphic movie about the civil war in Guatemala. It lasted six years and was really awful. The movie gave me a heavy heart and empty chest. In other news, I did my homework in a cafe and drank the best horchata there....
It's time for sleep. I'm a little afraid that I love Xela more than is healthy....until tomorrow!

Salsa!!!!
Volví a una discoteca de salsa hace quince minutos más o menos. Estoy cansada; hoy fui a una clase de salsa antes de la discoteca y hablé mucho con mi profesora sobre muchas cosas mas complicadas que antes. Religión, aborto....muchas cosas mas importante que la clima. También miré el partido de fútbol de Argentina y Holanda. Hubo un celebración grande cuando Argentina ganó.
Ahora voy a dormir- necesito alguno sueño antes de una otra día en esta ciudad relajada!
Got back from a salsa club about 15 minutes ago. I'm tired; today I went to a salsa class before the club and talked a lot with my professor about lots of things that were more complicated than before. Religion, abortion....a lot of things more important than the weather. I also watched the soccer game between Argentina and Holland. There was a huge celebration when Argentina won.
Now I'm off to sleep- I need some sleep before another day in this chilled out city!

Todavía aclimo a Xela. Cosas interesantes que pasaron hoy:
Durante de mi clase, empecé a leer en español :) Fue muy emocionada porque fue muy diferente de mis clases pasados. Leí un novela que se llama "Carazamba"- es para adultos jóvenes. Soló terminé una pagina porque la lengua es muy poética.
Compré un teléfono celular. Ahora, si yo me pierda, tengo un instrumenta de salvador. (es una broma, mamá. No te preocupes)
Viaje a un pueblo cerca de Xela que se llama "Sálcaja". Vi una iglesia muy bonita y un mercado muy interesante. Hubo una persona que estaba vendiendo huevos de tortugas.
Cociné con mi mamá anfitriona y teníamos un conversación inteligente (más o menos). Me enseño sobre sazones y le enseñé las nombres en inglés!
Recibí un lección de mapa de mi hermana anfitriona. Fue interesante- aprendí que hay 24 municípios y 22 departamentos en Guatemala.

Still acclimating to Xela. Some interesting things happened today:
During my class, I started reading in Spanish :) It was exciting because it was different than my Spanish classes in the past. I read a novel called "Carazamba"- it's for young adults. I only finished one page because the language was very poetic.
I bought a phone. Now, if I get lost, I have a tool to save me. (just kidding, mom. Don't worry)
I went to a town next to Xela called Salcája. I saw a beautiful church and a really interesting market. There was a person there selling turtle eggs.
I cooked with my host mom and we had an intelligent conversation (more or less). She taught me about spices and I taught her the names of the spices in English.
I got a map lesson from my host sister. It was interesting; I learned that there are 24 municipalities and 22 departments in Guatemala.

Durante de mi clase, empecé a leer en español :) Fue muy emocionada porque fue muy diferente de mis clases pasados. Leí un novela que se llama "Carazamba"- es para adultos jóvenes. Soló terminé una pagina porque la lengua es muy poética.

El día primera de escuela
Mucho pasó hoy- hay mucho decir sobre mi día primera en Juan Sisay. Tenía un reunión de Yaneth, la directora general de la escuela; ella les dijo a los estudiantes nuevos sobre su como el escuela funciona. Hoy hubo cuatro estudiantes nuevos; en la escuela están más o menos veinte estudiantes en total. Entonces conocí a mi profesora: se llama Claudia y me gusta mucho. No habla mucho inglés, y por eso necesitaba ayuda de ella para le comunicar. Durante de mi clase, aprendí sobre todos los actividades de esta semana. En el fin de mi clase, estaba MUY cansada y mi cabeza estaba muy llena.
Razon primero que estaba cansada: no dormí mucho la noche pasada porque hubo un terremoto. 7.1 en el escalo de Rictor. MUY GRANDE. Pero mi familia anfitriona y yo estamos bien. Fue un "bienvenidos a Xela" para mi.
Por eso despues de escuela dormí, comí un almuerzo delicioso (mi madre anfitriona Bea es un cocinada buena) y fue al un museo de la ropa y cultura Maya en Guatemala. Entonces volví y hice mi tarea, cenó, y pasó tiempo con mi familia.
Tengo muchos sentimientos en mi cabeza y mi corazón ahora, pero el mayoría es positivo. Me gusta mucho la energía de este lugar. Voy a aclimar y voy a encantarlo.
A lot happened today- there's alot to say about my first day at Juan Sisay. I had a meeting with Yaneth, the general director of the school; she told the new students all about how the school works. Today there were 4 new students; in the school there's about 20 total. Then I met my teacher. Here name is Claudia and I like her a lot already. She doesn't speak much English, so I needed her help (and a lot of hand gestures) to communicate. During my class, I learned about all of this week's activities. At the end of class I was SUPER tired and my brain was full.
Reason #1 that I was tired: we had an earthquake in Xela last night. 7.1 on the Richter scale. HUGE. But my host family/house and I are fine. It was a nice welcome :P
So after school I slept, ate a delicious lunch (my host mom Bea is a great cook) and went to a museum about the traditional Mayan clothing and culture of Guatemala. Then I came back and did my homework, ate dinner, and spent some time with my host family.
I have a lot of feelings in my head and my heart right now, but mostly they're positive. I like the energy of this place. I'm going to acclimate and then I'm going to love it.

Mis conversaciónes primeras
Hola amigos y familia, estoy oficialmente en mi casa (por los seis semanas próximas). Mi cabeza está llena de español y personas nuevas. Cada persona que yo he conocido es muy simpático: Doris, la mujer en mi avión quién me habla en español por una hora, Jason, un hombre en el autobus que practica español conmigo, la mujer de la escuela que me manejó a mi familia. Mi familia anfitriona especialmente es muy simpático. Es mi madre anfitriona Bea y su esposo, y tienen tres niñas bonitas: once, cinco y cuatro años. Jugué con ellas hasta ahora :)
Bea dijo que "nuestra casa es tu casa"; por eso, estoy muy emocionada para vivir aquí. Empezaré mis clases en la mañana. Hasta mañana!

Everyone I've met is very friendly: Doris, the woman on my plane who spoke to me in Spanish for an hour, Jason, the guy on my bus who practiced Spanish with me, the woman who drove me to my host family. My host family especially is super nice. It's my host mom Bea and her husband, and they have three beautiful little girls: 11, 5 and 4 years old. I played with them until now!
Bea said "our house is yours"; so, I'm pretty pumped to live here. I'll start classes in the morning. Until tomorrow!

He llegado en Guatemala! Estoy esperando en un hotel Dos Lunas- en una hora, voy al estación de autobus y entonces conoceré mi familia anfitriona! Estoy emocionada y muy nerviosa! Me desea suerte!
